What is Kapton Tape?

Kapton tape (also called PI polyimide tape) is an insulating high-temperature masking tape.
- Base material: Polyimide film
- Adhesive: Silicone adhesive (most common for rework)
- Key property: Non-conductive, excellent heat resistance
- Typical temperature resistance: Continuous 260°C, short-term up to 300°C
- Feature: Low residue after heating, tear-resistant
✅ Best uses for motherboard repair:
- Mask nearby SMD components, connectors and gold fingers during BGA reballing / hot air soldering
- Insulate flexible cables, battery tabs
- Protect sensitive parts from hot air and flux splatter
- Cover pads that you do NOT want to solder
❌ NOT for: EMI shielding, signal noise reduction
What is Aluminum Foil Tape?

Aluminum foil tape uses aluminum foil as the substrate, coated with acrylic adhesive and backed with release liner.
- Base material: Aluminum foil
- Adhesive: Acrylic adhesive
- Key property: Electrically conductive, heat reflective, EMI shielding
- Typical temperature resistance: Long-term 80°C, short-term peak 300°C
- Feature: Flexible, good for wrapping and grounding
✅ Best uses for motherboard repair:
- EMI shielding modification for logic boards / shielding cans
- Reduce signal interference, static noise
- Reflect radiant heat
- Grounding improvement (must contact ground plane to work!)
- Extra applications: HVAC sealing, plant grafting & gardening protection
❌ NOT for: Masking during hot air rework!
Critical warning: Aluminum foil conducts electricity. If it touches exposed solder pads, traces or pins directly, it will create a short circuit and burn your motherboard. Never use it to mask components when blowing chips.
